focuslightSte-Genny's Youth Group

Who's Invited?

Anyone between 12 and 25 years of age.
We have two groups:
FOCUS for ages 12-16
and
LIGHT for ages 17-25.

What Do We Do?

Each of the groups mentioned above (FOCUS & LIGHT) participates in fun activities throughout the year. Some of these activities are joined, while others are for a specific age group. These fun activities include laser quest, bowling, pumpkin picking, sleepovers, alternative worship services, movie nights, dramatic productions, arts n’ crafts nights, painting, music nights, etc…

We support our church by aiding other groups of our church with their events: Community's Coffeehouse and various Ste-Genny's Fund-raisers. We also have done fund-raising for outside organizations. We sponsored the placement of a collection box in the church hall to collect donations (toiletries, clothing, etc.) for Dans La Rue. We also organized some events for the whole congregation, like "Walking in His Footsteps", and occasionally led in Sunday worship.

We have weekly discussion groups (Sunday mornings) related to the scripture readings of the week. We lead one worship service in June, and do other in-service activities during the year for special events and/or holidays.

We have had joint activities with several other churches (from various denominations) throughout the West-Island. These activities include: an evening of improv, a survivor day challenge, a body maze, a scavenger hunt, a mystery night, bowling and so much more to come! In April 2008 we visited a Sikh temple, in March 2009 a Mosque. During summer and fall 2008 several youth spent an evening working on the Dans La Rue bus (The Van) to serve and assist youth living on the street. In October 2009 we had a very moving presentation and discussion about Invisible Children, see a special video here and the Invisible Children website here. We have started a project on this, raising funds and increasing awareness of the plight of child soldiers in Uganda. A group of youth, and several leaders, attended the Worshiplude Youth Rally in Ottawa in February 2010.

Everyone is welcome at our get togethers. Bring a few friends.
The possibilities are endless as we are always open to suggestions!

A special moment with Dans La Rue

In fall 2008 members of the congregation were asked to prepare "Christmas Stockings" to be collected during the Christmas Pageant on December 7 to be given to Dans La Rue…. People were being asked to bring in a pair of new socks filled with items that a homeless person would require (ie: toothbrush, toothpaste, candy bar, brush, comb, etc.) and to please place the filled socks in a Ziploc bag to keep the items secure and together. A representative from Dans La Rue was there to accept our gifts! More than 300 bags were collected that December day. On December 18 a number of youth and their leader once again spent the evening working on the Dans La Rue bus. This time they also handed out the Christmas Stockings. This is one of the stories from that evening, submitted by Lisa:
"Two young men no older that 15 or 16 climbed aboard the bus. Our two elves handed them their Christmas stockings. One of them started digging into their loot and pulled out a huge warm pair of winter socks and just started crying with joy. He then proceeded to remove his wet and ratty boots, removed his socks that had holes in them and put on the new warm socks. It seemed that the moment lasted forever as he basked in the warmth of the love he felt. He then proceeded to put batteries into the little am/fm radio he pulled out of the stocking, and then shared one of the earphones with his friend. These two young men probably once off the bus and back out in the cold, would be fighting over food, money, cigarettes or whatever they could get their hands on. In that moment the young man felt loved and shared it with another soul.  He felt humanized even if only for a few moments. In that time each and every one of you was present. From those who take the time to drive us to Dans La Rue, to those of you who put together the packages of love, those of you who have donated blankets and coats and those of you who continue to encourage and support our youth in their outreach projects and personal growth. God is awesome and thank you to everyone for making this possible. We collected over 300 bags of love to share for that night. There was so many packages left over that they were also shared with another youth bunker in Montreal. It is difficult to imagine living on the streets, in the cold without a family to love you, a warm bed to lie in and regular meals to eat. I would ask you that every time you sit down for a meal, or climb into your bed or come home to someone who loves you, say a prayer for those who go without. God hears our prayers and through your generosity and time, we are able to pass that love on even if only for brief moment in time. It's in those times that God reminds us we are not alone."
