STE-GENEVIÈVE UNITED CHURCH (or, informally, STE-GENNY’S) was founded in March of 1958, with the official inauguration being instituted by the Montreal Presbytery of The United Church of Canada in November 1958. The inaugural service was held November 23, 1958. STE-GENEVIÈVE UNITED CHURCH, along with ROXBORO UNITED CHURCH, formed a single two-point Pastoral Charge until January 1961, when two separate charges were established. In October 2008 we celebrated our 50th anniversary. On Saturday, October 25, we shared a pot-luck supper, we shared memories, and it was followed by entertainment and sing-along led by our own Community band. Sunday, October 26, we had a special Service of praise and thanksgiving where we acknowledged and celebrated this special milestone of our Family of Faith.
The name, “STE-GENEVIÈVE,” was chosen because the whole region, at that time, was known as Ste-Geneviève-de-Pierrefonds. (Note that Ste is the abbreviation for Sainte.)
This Congregation was formed as a result of the vision and hard work of a few people in this area who felt called to establish a place of worship in the tradition of The United Church of Canada. The first members of the Congregation met in a local Fire Station and, subsequently, in one of the local schools. For a time, after receiving permission from the Montreal Presbytery to erect a church building, they held Sunday Services and Sunday School in a house which stood where the present parking lot is located. The present facility was built and dedicated in 1963. For a few years following its construction, much of the adjacent land remained as farm land, and St. John’s Road (now a Boulevard) was a bumpy, winding country road.
We serve the western and central parts of Pierrefonds, the western part of Dollard-des-Ormeaux, Ile-Bizard, Ste-Geneviève, and part of Kirkland. We also have people coming from other municipalities of the West-Island as well as from off-island.
Our activities cover every age group. We have a place for the whole family, including, at present: United Church Women’s Group, Discussion / Study Groups, Crafts Group, Pastoral Care Team, Mission & Outreach, Choir, Community Singing Ministry Group, etc. Another denomination and various community groups also use our facility.
“Ste-Geneviève United Church’s mission is to witness to and for Jesus Christ by partnering with community organizations / groups to provide a variety of healing / wellness opportunities for the community at large and for our own and other faith communities.”
“Ste-Geneviève United Church’s vision is to continue growing in our faith in Jesus Christ – and living it – by becoming a resource centre for the wellness of Mind, Body and Spirit, dedicated to providing opportunities, for the community at large and for our own congregation, to receive support in dealing with life’s transitions.”
Many of the original Charter Members of this Congregation have either died or moved away. Those who are still on our membership roll include: Joan Locke, Mercy Rattigan, Patricia Turner
WE ARE AN ACTIVE CONGREGATION OF The United Church of Canada.
